Fernando Torres was the difference between the 2 sides as Liverpool travelled to Sunderland on the opening day of the new Premier League season. The game had looked like heading towards a goalless draw when the new strike partnership of Keane and Torres botched the best chance of the game. Gordon had agilily reacted to a deflected Dirk Kuyt shot pulling off a one handed save but the ball rebounded into the path of Torres who looked to dink the ball into the open net only to see it blocked on the line by teammate Keane.

In a game devoid of real chances Torres had to wait untill the last 10 minutes before he could find a yard of space and that was all he needed to smash the ball past the helpless Craig Gordon from 25 yards and rattle the back of the net. Luckily for Torres and Liverpool by this time Robbie Keane had already left the field and there was no way back for Sunderland from there.
