Snowball fight stops game
Bored of racially abusing the oppositions players Atletico Madrid’s fans found a new weapon to attack the visiting side with – snowballs. Bitterly cold conditions in the Spanish capital on sunday gifted the Madrista’s with enough ammo to halt the game after bombarding Athletic Bilbao’s keeper with a volley of well aimed snowballs. Referee Cesar Muniz Fernandez was forced to pull the players off the pitch whilst club officials pleaded with the home fans to desist from pelting the players with projectiles:
“Before the start of the game, and when we were on the pitch, home fans behind the goal defended by Bilbao threw numerous snowballs towards the goal, some of them hitting the goalkeeper. In the fifth minute, I was forced to stop the game for a minute because of the continuous throwing of snowballs and had to ask officials to take the necessary measures.”
It was all in the vain for the Atleti though, as when the teams did kick off again Bilbao ran out 3-2 winners in shock upset.
