Tottenham were expected to steamroll a young Middlesbrough team at the Riverside stadium but Spurs new signings failed to live upto the hype and Juande Ramos’ decision to leave Dimitar Berbatov on the bench soon seemed foolish. Boro had a perfectly good goal ruled out early in the first half after Wheater had headed in from a corner whilst being held by Dawson but the referee inexplicably ajudged Wheater as the aggressor. The stocky defender was undeterred and soon popped up again at a set piece to put Boro ahead after Alves had hit the bar. The game was eventually settled by former Tottenham man Mido who diverted the ball into the back of the net from close range before Robert Huth headed past his own keeper in the dying seconds of injury time.
