Arsenal once again got the better of Steve McClaren as they dispatched his FC Twente side in the first leg of the qualifying round. Second half goals from William Gallas and Emanuel Adebayor were good enough to give the gunners the cushion need to take back to the Emirates in 2 weeks.

Meanwhile in Belgium Liverpool were held to a goalless draw with Belgian champions Standard Liege who were awarded a controversial penalty early in the first half when debutant Andrea Dossena was wrongly adjuged to have handled in the box. Pepe Reina saved the reds and refs blushes by denying Liege youngster Dante from the spot.
